What is Advair?
Advair contains fluticasone and salmeterol. Fluticasone is a steroid. It prevents the release of substances that cause inflammation. Salmeterol is a bronchodilator. It works by relaxing muscles in the airways to improve breathing. Advair is used to prevent asthma attacks. Advair is also used prevent flare-ups or worsening of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) associated with chronic bronchitis and/or emphysema. Advair may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.
Important Information About ADVAIR DISKUS for Asthma:
Prescription ADVAIR won't replace fast-acting inhalers for sudden symptoms and should not be taken more than twice a day. ADVAIR is for people who still have symptoms on another asthma controller, or who need two controllers. ADVAIR contains salmeterol. In patients with asthma, medicines like salmeterol may increase the chance of asthma-related death. So ADVAIR is not for people whose asthma is well controlled on another controller medicine. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treating your asthma with ADVAIR. Do not use ADVAIR with long-acting beta2-agonists for any reason. If you are taking ADVAIR, see your doctor if your asthma does not improve or gets worse. Thrush in the mouth and throat may occur. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure. Some people may experience increased blood pressure, heart rate, or changes in heart rhythm. ADVAIR is for patients 4 years and older. For patients 4 to 11 years old, ADVAIR 100/50 is for those who have asthma symptoms while on an inhaled corticosteroid.
If you are using Advair for Asthma:
ADVAIR helps patients like you breathe better every day.* It treats both main causes of asthma symptoms—airway constriction and inflammation†—to help prevent them from occurring in the first place. ADVAIR is for people who still have symptoms on another asthma controller, or who need two controllers. And ADVAIR DISKUS is the only medication approved for use in children 4 years and older that treats both main causes of asthma symptoms.†
*People ages 12 years and older taking ADVAIR 100/50 experienced improvements in lung function and reductions in both asthma symptoms and fast-acting inhaler use, compared with people taking either fluticasone propionate 100 mcg or salmeterol 50 mcg (inhalation powders) alone. Your results may vary. †ADVAIR DISKUS is a maintenance therapy that contains two medicines that treat the two main causes of asthma symptoms; most other products treat only one.Important Information About ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 for COPD:
ADVAIR DISKUS 250/50 is approved for adults with COPD, including chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. You should only take 1 inhalation of ADVAIR twice a day. Higher doses will not provide additional benefits. People with COPD taking ADVAIR may have a higher chance of pneumonia. Call your doctor if you notice any of the following symptoms: change in amount or color of sputum, fever, chills, increased cough, or increased breathing problems. ADVAIR may increase your risk of osteoporosis and some eye problems (cataracts or glaucoma). You should have regular eye exams. Thrush in the mouth and throat may occur. Tell your doctor if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure before taking ADVAIR. Do not use ADVAIR with long-acting beta2-agonists for any reason.
